Chapter Eight

A nervous flutter shook her as she slid her hands along the rough planes of his chest, a deeper sense of something happening here that she had no conscious awareness of.

But whatever it was, she wanted it, the stirring of this unknown emotion like nothing she’d ever experienced. Her hands trembled as she reached his shoulders.

Swallowing, she slipped the shirt off.

She gasped, the sight, the feel, of his body taking her breath away. Never had she touched a man who moved her like this. She forced herself to focus, remembering her promise to tend his injury. “Maybe we should look at your back first.”

“Chicken.” He grinned, his heart-stopping smile shaking her resolve. She became lost. She stepped back, barely regaining her balance, and turned him around.

If anything could put a damper on the evening, the sight of his wound stopped her cold. “Oh Gary…” Parts of his bruised, scraped flesh rose from the swollen muscle underneath. “This looks awful.”

He snorted. “Yeah, just what I wanted to hear.”

She picked up the antiseptic. “I’m not sure how much I can do with this.” Taking a cloth, she poured the liquid on it and dabbed his skin. She used the only thing he’d had, an old-fashioned type of cure-all that burned, but when she applied the antiseptic, Gary barely flinched. “Your nerves must be made of steel.”

He glanced back at her, his hot gaze penetrating her ego-driven barriers. “Not all of them,” he breathed, his full lips parted and inviting.

She paused, taken aback from the intensity in his deep, husky voice. And his eyes.

They told so much more. His powerful look reached out and spoke to every hidden desire she’d had.

“Turn around,” she ordered before her courage failed her, and moved his chin forward, struggling to keep control. “I can’t see your back.” When he did, she dabbed again and failed miserably to steady her breathing.

He chuckled softly, the low rumble deep, yet light. “I didn’t realize cleaning my back would take this much effort.”

“It doesn’t.” She sighed, reminding herself she would set the pace in this seduction, but afraid she would lose her sanity before she finished and her courage ran out.

“Really?”

“No. Why do you ask?” She inhaled a deep breath and concentrated on dabbing his wound, grateful she was almost finished. Conflicted by her angst and desire, she could barely focus on the task.

The shift in his body forced her to stop. When he turned, his piercing gaze locked on hers. “Then your heavy breathing must be from something else,” he murmured and grasped her body, pulling her toward him.

Damn, she thought. Her pulse soared. She couldn’t fight this feeling anymore, nor did she want to. She fell willingly against his powerful chest and into his welcoming arms.

He held her close as he sat down, guiding her legs to straddle him. His calloused palms slipped upward against her thighs, sparks of fire lighting her skin where they touched, rousing her feminine core in heated, delicious waves. He continued alongside her hips and up her back, his caress a gentle torture of sensual pleasure.
